Viola Sizes Unlike the violin, there is no accepted full size for a viola. The size will depend on the size the player can manage. The size of stringed instruments is usually not the overall lengh, but the length of the back without the neck.
What size should I Buy? The best way to find the correct size is to consult your Teacher. If this is not possible, come into our shop (or your nearest specialist shop) to try out different sizes. We can then advise on size. Select an instrument that is within your capability to handle comfortably. There is nothing worse than trying to learn good technique on an instrument that is too big.
Is bigger going to sound better? Tricky one this. Some people will say so. However, its certainly not the whole story. Like any stringed instrument, the quality of making will be a very large factor in the sound production. Other factors that increase or decrease the violas ability to sound good are woods used, the type and quality of the strings and the final set up, usually done by the seller.
