A Brief History
Courtney and Walker are a family run company now in the third generation.
The history of the firm dates back to 1936 when Madam Courtney opened
an accordian shop in Portsmouth called 'Courtney's Accordians'.
In 1947 Wilfred Walker joined the company as co-teacher and in 1952 entered
into the company and Courtney and Walker was formed. For many years we
were a specialist accordian firm, selling, repairing and teaching accordian.
Madam Courtney also had an accordian band. After this, under Jeff Walker
(2nd generation) and later his sons Paul Walker and Martin Walker, the firm took a direction as a general music shop and became one of the largest and best known
in the area.
The third generation run by Paul Walker, sees the firm becoming less of a general music shop and being much more specialist in certain areas as well as developing an on-line presence.
The current focus of the company is;
- Woodwind instruments, Particularly Clarinet, flute and Saxophone
- Strings- Violin, Viola, cello and Double bass
- Ukulele
- Repair and Restorations of Woodwind, Strings and Guitar
And of course we also hold a range of quality accessories for all these
instruments.
We have fully equipped workshops which provide excellent backup for the
products we sell, together with an experienced crafrsman focused on high quality work.
